Schinoussa, differs from any other small island in Cyclades having a kind of exotic beauty. The island of Schinoussa belongs to the group of islands that forms “Lesser Cyclades” which is formed by Donoussa, Koufonisia, Irakleia and Schinoussa. There are beautiful beaches with light blue water and interesting sea bed for snorkelling. Most of the hotels and restaurants are located in the settlements of Hora and Messaria.Recent excavations on the island have found settlements dating back to Hellenistic and early Christian period. Later on Schinoussa was abandoned, because of the frequent raids of pirates. Schinoussa probably was used as a shelter for pirates and many of the beaches are named of pirates’ names such as Liolios’ and Vazeos’ beaches. Since 1850 families from Amorgos came to live in the island again.Schinoussa spans an area of 7,8 sq. km. with a total population of 260 residents. The islands closer to Schinoussa are Naxos on the north, Koufonisia on the northeast and Irakleia on the west.Mersini is the port of Schinoussa and one of the best shelters of small ships in Aegean Sea. Hora is the main settlement where there is a little folk museum that features a reconstructed bread oven. The nearest beaches to the settlement of Hora are Tsigouri and Livadi beach. Further on there are the beaches of Almyros and Aligaria.Kopanisti and ladotiri are the types of cheese produced by the locals.
