A trip to Sikinos is another wonderful escape from modernity and the tourist crowded neighbouring islands like Santorini and Ios. Yet the island of Sikinos is not smaller but not so densely populated. The tourist development in the recent past decades has offered to visitors many hotels to choose among for their stay but the settlements still live in peaceful slow paced mode. The name of the island has been the same since antiquity with a slight moderation by the Venetians who refer to Sikinos Island as Sykandros probably because of the production of figs of the island (syka means figs in Greek). The history of Sikinos is in general the same with the history of the islands of Cyclades, falling under Venetian Rule in the 12th century for 400 years and then under Ottoman Rule till the Greek Revolution in 1821.Sikinos spans an area of 42,5 sq. km. with a total population of 238 residents. The islands closer to Sikinos are Ios on the east, Folegandros on the west and Santorini on the southeast. The island of Sikinos has an extensive network of footpaths where you can enjoy walking. This was the starting point for attracting an alternative form of tourism with visitors who have a great respect and show responsibility towards the natural beauty of the island. The remains of the Venetian fortress that still stand is a charming place to visit. A flight of whitewashed steps leads up to the church of Zoodohou Pigis with great view to the town. Alopronia is the main port of Sikinos Island and in walking distance there are two interesting places for swimming, Katergo and Agios Nikolaos. The local products are produced in quantities to cover the needs of the residents but you can try them at the restaurants: dairy products like sour skimmed milk and cheese, honey, wine and vinegar.By ferry boats departing from Pireaus Port in Athens.Police: +30 22860 51222Port Authorities of Sikinos: +30 22860 51121Medical Services: +30 22860 51211From June to September.
