Donoussa is a small island in the Cyclades that still remains untouched by the modern lifestyle and tourism. It is part of ‘Little Cyclades’ as is used to refer to the group of islands of Donoussa, Schinoussa, Koufonissia and Iraklia. This miniature of heaven on earth is a destination with few hotels and seasonal taverns for travellers who seek the ultimate relaxation.Donoussa, because of its location, was an inevitable stop at various sea trips. This is proved by the ruins of a settlement on a steep promontory deep anchorage, Vathi Limenari, dating between the 8th and 9th century BC. The pottery figures excavated show that this was a trading post in sea route, which linked the mainland and the eastern Aegean. The island was later abandoned and was used as exile and was inhabited again in the 18th century by people from the islands of Naxos and Amorgos.Donoussa spans an area of 13,5 sq. km. with a total population of 163 permanent residents. The islands closer to Donoussa are Naxos on the west and Amorgos on the south.The village of Mersini has natural springs of drinking water and rich vegetation. The village is built on the hill and offers a stunning view; enjoy it ideally from the little church of Agia Sofia.Enjoy snorkelling in the beach of Kedros where you can see the wreck of a German ship from the World War. Kedros beach is the only beach on Donoussa where nudism and camping are allowed.Kavourmas is a local sausage made of pork and beef meat, it is served in thin slices.One of the local specialties is baked goat meat stuffed with rice.By ferry boats departing from Pireaus Port in Athens. There is connection with the islands of Naxos and Amorgos.
