The region of Thessaly or Thessalia as it is called in Greek, boasts for having in its territory the summer house of Olympian Gods on Mount Pelion and the extraordinary geological phenomenon of the rock forest of Meteora nesting some of the most important monasteries in Greece. The tourist facilities have been developed in the recent years and you can choose among hotels either on the mountain, by the sea shore or dotted around the Lake Plastira. The region is also famous for the local cuisine you can try in the restaurants or for those seeking adventure like hiking, skiing and rafting.
According to mythology, Jason and the Argonauts launched their search for the Golden Fleece from Thessaly and the Mount Olympus was the place where the Olympian Gods used to live. Thessaly has a long history that goes deep in the past and myths. Thessalians became allies with Persians but changed field becoming allies with Athens after their defeat. Thessaly was associated with the Macedonian Kingdom for the next centuries and later became part of the Roman Empire. During the period of Byzantine Empire, Thessally was several times invaded by Slavs, Bulgarians, from 1271 to 1318 it was an independent despotate and later it was occupied by the Serbs and last by the Ottomans. In 1821, Thessaly joined the Greek War of Independence and was recognized as part of Greece in 1881.Thessaly shares borders with the regions of Western and Central Macedonia, the southern region of Central Greece, west of the region of Epirus, and east coast of the Aegean Sea. It spans a total area of 14.036 sq. km. with a total population of 760.000 residents. Thessalia is half mountainous and half flat including both the largest granary plains and Mount Olympus, the highest in Greece. There is also the artificial lake of Tavropos or Plastiras Lake as it is usually referred to. It comprises of the Prefectures of Magnesia, Trikala, Karditsa and Larissa.
Thessaly has in general Mediterranean Climate but due to the high mountain ranges found in the region the climate can be identified like Alpine. The winters are cold and damp and the summers are hot and dry. The city of Larissa is well known for having the highest temperatures in summer. -
