Built on an alluvial arm formed between two lagoons, the town of Messolonghi is connected like no other in the Greek Revolution of 1821, so it also carries the name "Holy City". It is the seat of the Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania and is 249 km. away from Athens, 35 km. from Agrinio and 37 km. from Antirio.
Today, although Mesolongi is a modern city full of life (not just because of the residents, but also because of students studying at local university), it still causes thrilled sentiments with its historic past. A visit to the Garden of Heroes, the Gate of Exodus, the Art Gallery and Museums of the city will give you a good taste of the rich history and the role played by the Holy City during the War of Greek Revolution.
During your stay in the historic and long-suffering Mesologgi it is worth visiting Tourlida. The road leading to it (5-6 km.) was constructed in 1885 on the western edge of the lagoon Klisova, and from then Tourlida stopped being an island. Today the road has been widened and has two lanes for cars, sidewalk and bikeway. The lagoon of Messolonghi is the largest in Greece, which is a shallow sea of silt Acheloos. This seaside lake, before Mesolonghi with sea water stretching from Accra Bampakoula despite the estuary Evinos to the foot of Mount Katsilari to the Sea and to a depth of Paliopotamos farm. Divided from the open sea of the Gulf of Patras from a coastal frieze of up to 80 cm from the mean sea level created by the silting of rivers Evinos and Acheloos. It has a maximum length of about 27,300 meters and a maximum width of 14,800 meters.
The greater depth of the lagoon reaches 6.5 m., But the bulk of a depth which does not exceed half a meter. Near the coast the depth reaches 0.1 meter and so it is convenient place for saltworks.The historic Holy City, as Mesolongi is also called, played a key role in the War of 1821. The gate of the Exodus, the earthy fence, the garden of Heroes with the tomb where the fighters' bones are buried, are only some of the evidence of the role played by the city in the fight of independence. All of them are among the highly interesting sights of Missolonghi, as well as the gallery of the city, where one has the opportunity to admire paintings of Greek and foreign artists of the 19th and 20th century, lithographs, and various other objects related to the period and persons the Greek Revolution.During your visit at Missolonghi, it is worth making a trip to see up close the lagoon and picturesque "pelades", thus the small wooden houses built on pilings in the water.
