Built on an alluvial arm formed between two lagoons, the town of Messolonghi is connected like no other in the Greek Revolution of 1821, so it also carries the name "Holy City". It is the seat of the Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania and is 249 km. away from Athens, 35 km. from Agrinio and 37 km. from Antirio.
Today, although Mesolongi is a modern city full of life (not just because of the residents, but also because of students studying at local university), it still causes thrilled sentiments with its historic past. During your stay in the historic and long-suffering Mesologgi it is worth visiting Tourlida. The road leading to it (5-6 km.) was constructed in 1885 on the western edge of the lagoon Klisova, and from then Tourlida stopped being an island. The lagoon of Messolonghi is the largest in Greece, which is a shallow sea of silt Acheloos. This seaside lake, before Mesolonghi with sea water stretching from Accra Bampakoula despite the estuary Evinos to the foot of Mount Katsilari to the Sea and to a depth of Paliopotamos farm.
