Description of Hydra
Hydra is the jewel on
Saronic’s crown. It has been the first island to establish a cosmopolitan air in the 60’s gathering celebrities from all over the world. Nowadays,
Ydra Island is a famous yachting destination with high quality tourist facilities, boutique
hotels, villas,
restaurants, night life and a yacht club.
Geography of Hydra
Hydra spans an area of 50 sq. km. with a total population of 2.526 residents. It is located close to the coasts of
Peloponnese in
Ermioni region. The islands closer to
Ydra are
Dokos on the northwest and
Spetses on the southwest.
History of Hydra
Hydra in 60’s is the first
Greek island to be discovered from foreigners as it became famous because of the movie “Boy on a dolphin” that was set here, starring Sophia Loren. It was the beginning of a cosmopolitan atmosphere created in
Greece attracting celebrities and visitors from all over the world.
Ydra has also been a great naval power during the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and many of the major captains were born here and played a vital role in the war.
Sightseeing on Hydra
Ydra has no motorised transport. Donkeys and mules are the main means of transport so walking thrives in this destination. Most of the beaches of the island are rocky but there are also some sandy exceptions. The most popular beaches are: Mandraki, Kamini, Molos, Bisti and Agios Nikolaos. Some of the more interesting sites here are: the Historical File Museum with documents, books and other exhibits of the Greek Revolution in 1821, the faculty of Fine Arts has established a new branch there, which is open for the public to visit.
Local Products of Hydra
Handmade jewelry and traditional embroideries are sold in Hydra. Try also amugdalota, the traditional sweets of marjipan.
Getting to Hydra
By ferry boats departing from Piraeus Port in Athens. By water taxis from the port of Ermioni in Peloponnese.
Best time to visit Hydra
All year round. Especially from May till October for summer holidays and swimming.
In Easter you can enjoy the local custom of the Epitaph in the sea and the burning of Judas’ dummy. The Miaoulis Festival takes place every June, honouring the memory of the great captain Miaoulis with spectacular events and fireworks.
