The island of Spetses is a very popular destination for both weekends and summer holidays. Although the mainland Peloponnese is only a few kilometres away, there’s a strong sense of SaronicIsland here. There are many hotels and summer houses of mainlanders, night life and restaurants in the historical harbour of Dapia with mansions and pebble paved streets.

In September the naval battle of Armata is celebrated with burning a boat, a spectacle which attracts many visitors.
History of Spetses
Some of the most important personalities of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 were from Spetses, Laskarina Bouboulina and Chatzigiannis Mexis. The fearless fighter Bouboulina was the only woman who has ever been entitled as Captain. The island’s pine forests are a legacy of philanthropist Sotirios Anargyrios, a wealthy immigrant in the USA who planted the pine trees.
Geography of Spetses
Spetses is an island located very close to Peloponnese and spans an area of 27 sq. km. with a total population of 3.916 residents. The islands closer to Spetses are Spetsopoula, Dokos and Hydra on the east.
Sightseeing on Spetses
Dapia is the main square of Spetses surrounded by old mansions of captains. Bouboulina’s house is now an interesting Museum not far from the main square of Dapia. The old Harbour is also a place with night life, bars and clubs. The most popular beaches on the island are: Aghia Marina, Aghioi Anargyri, Aghia Paraskevi, Ligoneri, Zegoria and many more.
