Koulouri: Bread twist with sesame is the Athenians’ favorite snack, especially for breakfast. Apart from the traditional one, there are also bread twists with raisins, cheese, olives and donuts dipped in crunchy crystal sugar. It costs € 0.60 the simple one and vendors can be found on the busiest streets of Athens and close to metro stations.
Corn on the cob in the summer, roasted chestnuts in the winter: The vendors roast them on a small grill right in front of you. The delicious corn is salted and usually served with a toothpick to use afterwards. A corn can cost € 2 while a small bag with eight to ten chestnuts might cost around € 6 - € 8.
Salep beverage: Hot beverage usually served in the winter made of the grinded dried tubers of a species of orchid. It is sweet and very aromatic with a bit thick texture served with a touch of cinnamon. The best choice for a walk around Athens in winter.
The cost for a cup is around € 2.
Coconut sweet bars: Snacks made of coconut and sugar in bars. The small fountain with sprinkling water is the highlight of the vendor’s trolley. The cost for a packet wit 5 bars is € 5.
Fresh fruits: Bunches of grapes, strawberries, apples or any kind of seasonal fruits are sold by vendors all year round in Monastiraki Square. The prices are per kilo and they depend on the kind of fruits sold.
