Plaka... by day and night09-01-2013 14:55
Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens and one of the nicest. Although it used to be a hot spot full of night clubs in the past, the government banned the loud music and the neighborhood became much more pretty and traditional, ideal for walks.
Wandering through the narrow alley ways will make you think that this cannot be happening: A traditional settlement with neoclassical buildings, little yards with flowers that remind of a village, in the middle of a modern city like Athens? Yes, that's exactly what Plaka is. A break from the city noise and modern times. A magic travel to the past.
You'll find an array of shops, restaurants and cafes, while there is a large market with a variety of souvenirs and art crafts. Indeed, this is a nice point if you're looking for gifts from Greece for your beloved ones. If you happen to walk there on Sundays, you'll be astonished by the crowds of locals and tourists who enjoy walking, shopping, talking pictures and generally hanging around...
One of the most picturesque parts of Plaka is the area of Anafiotika. It's all about a small neighborhood that reminds of Cycladic island, with little houses with blue windows, exactly like those on the Greek islands. Anafiotika is the area where actually people from the island of Anafi chose to build their homes when they moved to Athens, in order to remember their birthplace. So, they created this unique corner which impresses every visitor. And keep in mind that these traditional buildings, even if they look like poor, they are among the most expensive real estate of the town, that if you find anything for sale...
Except for the commercial and tourist interest, Plaka has also archaeological sites to be proud of. Under the Acropolis, to its north side which is mostly known as Thissio, there are remnants of the Ancient Market, where you'll have the chance to admire Efestos' temple, but also Attalus' arcade (Stoa Attalou).

Like a relay race of three generations; a journey with happy days, sad days, joys, sorrows, wars, Occupation, poverty, hunger, deaths, volcanic eruptions, catastrophic earthquakes, flee for a better life, return, better days, feasts, tourism explosion, financial crises and so on… Everything has been indelibly inscribed on the walls of this small building, Aktaion. I feel grateful that life has given me the opportunity to hold the reins of Aktaion all the way to its centennial.
It opened in 2004 and soon became one of the favourite dining spots in Santorini. It is called Metaxy mas which means.. between us, but it is not a secret any more that this restaurant has a rich menu with almost 40 different dishes and appetizers based on traditional Greek cuisine.

Touristorama has been travelling all around Greece and its islands for over a decade. This year, during our trip to Naxos, the biggest of the Cyclades complex, we discovered an interesting spot, perfect for your night out on the island… which is what we do best: finding the best places and then propose you should visit them! The best thing to do when you get to Naxos is to rent a car. Even if, there is public transportation, there could be long delays while waiting for buses. The most convenient option is to visit Naction...
