The amazing Mpourtzi in Nafplio10-04-2013 19:08Mpourtzi is located in one of the most romantic cities in Greece, Nafplio. In the middle of the harbour surrounded by sea its simply beautiful.
The Venetians completed its fortification in 1473 to protect the city from pirates. In June of 1822 the Greeks regained it from the Turkey. It served as a fortress until 1865 , then it became the residence of the executioners of convicts from the castle of Palamidi. For a short period it was a hotel and now it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Peloponnesus.
You can visit it by boat from Nafplio, walk around and take some lovely pictures or you can seat in any café on the dock in Nafplio and enjoy the view of it.
During the night it is lighted all around and the spectacle is really something to remember.
It is also a musical venue for the Nafplio Folk Music Festival which takes place in May and in June and the Maritime festival which starts the last Sunday of June and takes place every two years.

The statue of Poseidon, made of Parian marble, was found in 1877 on Milos island, along with a statue of his mate, Amphitrite. The larger than life-size statue depicts the god almost nude, wearing a himation covering the lower part of the body. In his raised right hand he will have held the trident. Next to his right leg is a support in the form of a dolphin. Today, the statue is exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens city.
