The region of Pieria is located in the southern part of Macedonia, facing the Aegean Sea. Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece and the seat of Greek gods, rises in the southern part of Pieria. The region of Pieria was a settlement of an expelled Thracian tribe that came here. Pieria was incorporated in the Kingdom of Macedon and became part of the Roman Empire after the Fourth Macedonian War, and later part of the Byzantine Empire. It was invaded by the Turks and became part of the Ottoman Empire for five centuries, until the Balkan Wars in 1913, when Pieria joined the Greek State. During the Greco-Turkish War refugees from Asia Minor came in Pieria and several places were named after their former homelands like Nea Trapezounta and Nea Efesos.
