The region of Kavala stretches on the southern part of Macedonia, facing the Aegean Sea. The city of Kavala is also an important ferry hub for the northeast Aegean and Dodecanese Islands and the nearest island of Thassos. The history of the region begins in the 7th century when the city of Neapolis is founded as a colony of Thasos. Later the seaport city of Philippi flourished under the rule of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The 20th century is Kavala’s golden era. From 1903 until 1909 the Greek inhabitants, with a high national morale, participate in Macedonian struggle. The flourishing tobacco trade and population growth have resulted in creating broad working class organized in powerful trade unions vigorously asserting its claims. Kavala is now one of the largest northern Greece cities. It is the city that many people rank among the most beautiful and picturesque of our country because of its unique character, its privileged location in which it was built and the warm and friendly atmosphere.The region of Kavala is situated in Macedonia, spanning an area of 1.728 sq. km. and a total population of 131.289 inhabitants. The neighbouring regions are Xanthi to the east, Drama to the north and Serres to the west. The capital city of the region is Kavala and the island of Thassos is part of the regional unit.Apart from the natural beauty of the region, there are many to see in the city: the Archaeological Museum, the Municipal Museum of Kavala, the Imaret a huge 18-domed structure overlooking the harbour that was built in 1817 by Pasha Mehmet Ali as a hostel for theology students. Do not miss the chance to take the ferry to the island of Thasos, as it is said to be the secret gem of North Aegean Sea.
