Thassos is one of the most popular Greek islands for families. Child friendly, lined with sandy beaches and very green, Thasos is an easy hop for independent travelers crossing northern Greece. Apart from the lacy coastline, the island of Thassos offers great hiking and mountain biking opportunities in the increasingly popular Thasos International Mountain Biking Race and numerous hotels to choose among.
The island of Thasos has a long history and an excellent little archaeological museum in the capital, a few Greco-Roman remains in the town, a submerged ancient marble quarry, Byzantine monasteries and Neolithic tombs. Thasos became in antiquity wealthy enough to build a navy, due to its gold deposits. While the gold is long gone, Thasos’ ancient gift of white marble – said to be the second whitest in the world – is still being exploited, much to the consternation of local environmentalists who decry the defacement of mountainsides this mining has caused. The controversy of the natural beauty of the island and its wealth still goes on as the main mineral deposits in Greece lie a bit further of the island.
The island of Thasos is part of the region of Kavala in Macedonia, spanning an area of 379 sq. km. and a total population of 13.765 inhabitants. It is only 10 km far from the harbour of Kavala.
Thasos is well known for its lovely beaches: Skala Prinos, Pachis, Rachoni, Glyadi. Apart from the beaches there are some very interesting monasteries like the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon and the Monastery of the Assumption. Krambousa Isle is worth a visit. It is located across the coast of Skala Potamia and is full with wild vegetables called "Krambi".Tourist Police in Thassos: +30 25930 23111
