The region of Imathia is not only home to the legendary Royal Tombs of Macedonian Kings in Vergina, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, but also a modern winter destination with three ski centers and fine local wine production. The snow capped Pieria Mountains attract numerous of skiers and winter sports lovers, while the visitors’ sophisticated palates can explore the gastronomic side of the once Macedonian kingdom capital. The hotels and the restaurants of the region are quite a pleasant surprise.
In the area of Imathia was located the first capital city of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, Aigai. The seat of Aigai was later kept as a royal burial site and the Royal Macedonian Tombs can be visited today in the archaeological site in Vergina. Later, Imathia was annexed to the Roman rule and later the Byzantine rule. Imathia was ruled by the Ottomans from the 15th century until the Balkan Wars of 1913 when joined Greece.The region of Imathia is located in Central Macedonia and the neighbouring regions are: Pella to the north, Thessaloniki to the east, Pieria to the south and Kozani to the west. The region spans an area of 1.701 sq. km. with a population of 140.710 residents. The capital city of the region is the city of Veria with population 47.411 residents.The burial site of Kings in Vergina is undoubtedly the most interesting sight in Imathia region. It was discovered in 1977 by the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos and is listed as a World Heritage Monument of high importance. The winter attractions of the region are mainly the ski centers on Vermion Mountain. The Seli Ski Center combines slopes for skiing, endurance runs, running trails and climbing (E4). The 3 – 5 Pigadia Ski Center is surrounded by lush vegetation and is provided with facilities like hostels, saunas, gyms and restaurants. Agios Nikolaos is also the ideal place for recreation. It is a huge park that crosses the river Arapitsa ideal for walking, exercising and relaxing provided with a hotel, restaurants and playgrounds. All around the region there are numerous wineries where you can try the local varieties of wine, some of the best in Greece.
