Gazi, new hip venue in town
18-09-2012 16:05Gazi in Greek stands for gas and yes there was a gas factory once right here! Nowadays, Gazi still supplies power to Athenians in a different way as it has recently become one of the new hip venues in town. Where the first industrial zone of Athens used to be, now is a new trendy neighborhood setting the new standards in Athens night life and cultural events.
In the Industrial Revolution era setting up a gasworks factory was an innovative plan to set the rules of development in the recently founded Greek State. The gas-work factory began its operation in 1864 supplying with power for lightning till 1984 when the operation of a factory in the heart of Athens was considered as damage to the environment and it finally stopped. To the years came by, the area of the old gasworks factory was transformed to a new kind of factory producing light in people spirits as it became a place for art exhibitions and various cultural events, like live concerts named Technopolis, meaning actually a city of arts.
The presence of Technopolis operating since 1999 gave a breath of a new era starting up in the old industrial neighborhood and Gazi has gradually developed to what you are going to see today: a brand new district with fresh people being hosted by old factory buildings creating unique scenery of architecture and contemporary art where the past has been reshaped into the present.
Apart from Technopolis, Gazi is nowadays the place where the heart of the night life in Athens beats. Smartly decorated restaurants, bars in simple factory buildings, old stairs leading up to green terraces with marvelous Acropolis view for having the coolest drink in town.
In the area around Gazi, on Pireos street and Iera Odos, there are the most of the live concert halls with famous Greek singers and a mass of small and big night clubs to choose among.
