Akrotiri is mainly visited for the archaeological site of great significance that has been excavated in 1967 by the archaeologist Spiros Marinatos. The prehistoric findings are very well preserved being buried under volcanic ashes. The surprisingly charming Red Beach is in walking distance of the settlement of Akrotiri. The red rocks and pebbles on the beach are of rare beauty and are actually formed of volcanic rocks.
