Surviving tips

Greece is famous for its numerous archaeological sites and the remarkable landscapes that usually frame them. If you wish to visit some of them, make sure you wear comfortable shoes for walking before starting your quest as it can be slippery and hilly. Because of the narrow alleys of the neighborhoods in the islands, walking can be the only way to get there!
Driving
Driving in Athens is quite an experience as Athenians are notorious for their driving skills and their impatient attitude on the streets. The traffic jam combined with pour signposting make driving in Athens a hard work. Make sure you have a detailed map of your route and enough time to get to your destination. The means of public transport have been upgraded, so you can always use one of them to get to your destination.
Cycling
Cycling becomes more and more in fashion for Athenians the last years but still the lack of cycling lanes in Athens and the driving standards of the city makes cycling risky. It is recommended though if you stick to the pedestrian walkways.
Taxis
Despite what is common in most of the European cities, the price of getting a cab in Athens is reasonable. Taxis in Athens are yellow with a TAXI sign on and you can hail one in the street or in rank but there are also radio-taxis that you can book by phone. The charge is higher during night time.
Accommodation
If you wish to go on an island-hopping in Greece, it is advisable to have already booked your accommodation, especially in August, in order to avoid spending the night on the beach! August is the month of holidays for Greeks and the islands, especially the little ones and the least known do not have as many hotels to provide accommodation.
