Touristorama met the owners and they told us everything about their new gelateria in Santorini.
Solo Gelato is a standard brand in the greek ice cream market. What made you bring it in the island of Santorini? How did you come up with the idea of opening a store here?
Not only is it an established brand, but also the best ice cream in Europe, winning the 1st place in the European Ice cream Championship, held in Berlin in 2012. It is fresh italian ice cream, with just 5% fat, always produced with fresh milk and fruits.
We are a group of three people, ice cream lovers as you may guess, who are happy to live in Santorini. We all wanted to leave from the city of Athens, so when we found the specific location in the central square of the capital of Fira, there was no second thought... we had to open our store here.
What is the concept of Solo Gelato, since you are in the most central part of Fira?
We desire to provide our clients with high quality ice cream, made of pure ingredients, like the one we make at home. This was our vision. To open a place where someone could enjoy a fresh juice or smoothie, his favourite coffee with a sweet or salty snack, and of course our delidious ice cream, feeling like at home, and relaxing as he watches so many people from all around the world.
What are the ice cream flavors served in Solo Gelato and what else can someone find here?
On daily basis we prepare in our own preparation area in Messaria of Santorini, 40 different flavours, all according to the original italian recipe. The award winning flavors you should definitely taste, are the pistacchio and the sorbet mango. Our guests can also enjoy the italian coffee Attibassi, fresh juices, imaginative smoothies and special hand made snacks.
During our stay in Santorini, we noticed that Solo Gelato is a place prefered not only by the tourist public, but also by the residents of the island, who stop by for your products. Why is that according to your opinion? Which is your competitive advantage?
Well, if you taste our ice cream, you'll get a clear answer. It is sure that, after you try it, you will not be able to enjoy an ice cream anywhere else.
What are the impressions of your clients? Do you have a feedback?
We opened Solo Gelato in September 2015, so it's only a few months it runs as a business. However, we have already been proposed to open other Gelaterias in cities abroad. For us, it is of great importance that the locals loved Solo Gelato so much. They do honor us daily with their presence. Our goal is to create beautiful memories, so that our guests and clients to enjoy the most of their travel in the most beautiful island of the world.

Aktaion - Writing gastronomic history since 1922
Like a relay race of three generations; a journey with happy days, sad days, joys, sorrows, wars, Occupation, poverty, hunger, deaths, volcanic eruptions, catastrophic earthquakes, flee for a better life, return, better days, feasts, tourism explosion, financial crises and so on… Everything has been indelibly inscribed on the walls of this small building, Aktaion. I feel grateful that life has given me the opportunity to hold the reins of Aktaion all the way to its centennial.
Santorini has a secret... but we have to share it.
It opened in 2004 and soon became one of the favourite dining spots in Santorini. It is called Metaxy mas which means.. between us, but it is not a secret any more that this restaurant has a rich menu with almost 40 different dishes and appetizers based on traditional Greek cuisine.

The Marmita Restaurant is now a part of the history of Santorini, since it has been operating in Megalochori since 2004. From 2013 it s been running under the observation of new owner Giannis Manikas and the sense of renewal is obvious.
