Matala was once one of the best known places of hippie hang-outs. The flower-power summer place of the 60’s probably has lost the original hippy appeal of those days but is still is a thriving holiday destination in Crete. Several hotels, pensions and taverns were built since then but the main attraction remains the complex of natural caves that spreads along a shimmering sandy beach.
The caves were originally Roman tombs which were dug in the 1st century AD from the early Christians living in the area probably as tombs or as dwellings. Matala was overrunned by hippies in the 60’s and 70’s. Back then, there were only 10 houses and one tavern. Nowadays, Matala is a tourist resort with modern facilities.Matala is a village located on the southern part of Crete, facing the Libyan Sea. Matala is 11km southwest of Phaestos, and 75km southwest of the city of Heraklion.
