06-10-2012 16:05Following westwards direction, we meet Gallikos River which springs from the Mount Kroussia and directed to south is poured in the gulf of Thermaikos. The fertile valleys of river were the main reason for many prehistoric settlements to be founded here whiles the sources of river are protected by the clump of Kroussia. Mount Kroussia with intense oppositions, with ravines and river streams with forests of beech and oaks, conifers and great variety of fauna, allocate paths and hospitable guest houses. Here is also the Balkan Botanic Garden of Kroussia where one will meet many of the endemic plants of Balkans that bloom all year round.
Discover it through different ways of tour that include rock gardens, pharmaceutical and aromatic gardens, waterfalls, small lakes, streams, shaped paths, meadows and forestall extents. In distance of 22 km westwards of Kilkis is found the town of Axioupoli in the fertile valley of Axios River which supports numerous important species of fauna and flora. For this reason it is considered as a biotope of special interest and great importance. The delta of Axios River in Thermaikos is of unique beauty. Mega Rema (Kotza - Ntere) is a beautiful stream that is found hardly 3 km. from Axioupoli as well as 15 km. longer you can visit the artificial Lake of Metallio. It has length of 2 km and depth 35m., and is the ideal place for resting, fishing of trout and other sport activities. The landscape is characterized by forests of natural unspoiled beauty.
Going east we meet the Mount Paiko, one of the most beautiful and magnificent mountains of Greece. Each visitor is charmed by the splendid forests, river streams and the picturesque villages of Mount Paiko: Griva, Karpi, Kastaneri, Livadia and other villages they offer the visitors the combination of beautiful landscape and the organised spaces of forest recreation. On the foothills of Mount Paiko is found the town of Goumenissa. Narrow streets and old traditional houses in an enchanting combination with abundant waters, the uniqueness of natural landscape and the cordial hospitality of residents, the region of Goumenissa offers the visitor peacefulness and mental balance. Goumenissa is also a centre of viticulture and is famous for the remarkable production of wine. Feasts and festivals of great splendour of upholding customs and traditions take place.
On the Northeast slope of Mount Paiko, only 4 km. far from the borders of the country, we meet the historical village of Skra, a name that has been given of the homonym battle of decisive importance for the course of Greek State but also of the World War 1. The landscape consists of unspoiled vegetation, abrupt small slopes that shape small or bigger waterfalls. The Lake Smaragdenia is a natural small lake lost behind one almost impenetrable dam from hazels and ivies, with frozen waters. The lake owes her name in the splendid emerald colour of waters because of the fossils of micro-organisms found in its seabed.
Continuing, on the foothills of Mount Belles we meet the Lake of Doirani and the homonym village, in the bank of the lake. The visitors find the chance to enjoy fishing any time of the year in new installations. Round the lake there are many paths leading to Mount Belles and to the “Thousand Trees”. The forest of “Thousand Trees” has been characterized as a “Monument of Nature” as it consists of oak trees dating up to 400 years. In this area 4km. far from the settlement a resting area has been formed with a traditional tavern and a vivarium.
Finally, southern of the prefecture, by the borders with Thessaloniki, is found the Lake of Pikrolimni. The clay at the seabed of lake is well known for its medical and cosmetic role. Pikrolimni offers fully equipped spa facilities, restaurants and modern hotel amenities for its numerous visitors.
