Description of Symi

Symi has an increased number of visitors in recent years among the Dodecanese Islands since it is the most popular day-trip destination from Rhodes. The natural beauty and the development in hotels, rooms and restaurants have attracted many tourists but also yacht owners. Typically rocky and dry as the most of the small islands of Dodecanese, Simi has a traditional post, interesting architecture, long history and charming beaches.

Symi spans an area of 65,7 sq. km. with a total population of 2.580 residents. It is located near Turkey on the north and the nearest town is Marmaris. The islands closer to Simi are Rhodes on the south, Tilos on the southwest and Nisyros on the west.

History of Symi

The island of Symi is known since antiquity mentioned also in Iliad for its participation in the Trojan War. Symi is part of the Roman Empire, then the Byzantine Empire and as the citadels found suggest that it has been an important place in the Aegean. In 1373 the Order of Knights of St. John came and economic growth through shipping and trade is established. In 1552, Simi is occupied by Ottomans but maintained privileges. Simi was the main supplier of sponges and ship builders to Sultan in exchange. Gracious mansions were built and culture and education flourished. In the 20th century Symi is conquered first by Italians, then by Nazis and by British. It finally joins Greece in 1948.

The lovely port with the mansions built on the hill is the first sight. The residents have given efforts to preserve the local architecture. The ruins of the castle built from the Knights are still on the top of the hill along with older ruins of citadel. Symi has also many churches and chapels scattered on the island and the Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis is still inhabited by monks. The beaches of the island are secluded and remote and you can visit them by boat.
