Description of Agathonisi


Agathonisi is a rocky and dry island scattered in the north part of Dodecanese, yet unknown of the vast majority of travellers. Agathonisi is the place where you can have the experience of castaway as it has a few simple hotels and restaurants with nice food.


Geography of Agathonisi


Agathonisi spans an area of 14,5 sq. km. with a total population of 158 residents. The islands closer to Agathonisi are Samos on the north, Lipsi and Patmos on the west. The Turkish coasts are near on the east.


History of Agathonisi


The kind island as its name suggests in Greek is a protected area because of the rare species of birds that nest here. This dot in the Aegean Sea has followed the same destiny of the rest of the Dodecanese Islands. It has been used as an exile several times and especially from Byzantines. This is considered to be the reason why the inhabitants of the island have a very distinctive and original Greek dialect. The island has suffered under Turks and Italians and became part of Greece in 1948.

Sightseeing on Agathonisi


The small paradise of Agathonisi has a settlement in the port of Agios Georgios and two inland settlements, Megalo Chorio and Mikro Chorio. It has many sheltered bays and interesting seabed for diving. The main sight of the island is located on the east side and is a complex of large arched structures dating back to the 11th century AD and believed to have been used for food storage. Agathonisi combines untouched island nature with the traditional way of life and authentic Greek hospitality.
