Samos boasts a distinguished history. Samos is believed to be the birthplace of goddess Hera and the ruins of the sanctuary of Heraion prove the importance of her worship. Samos has been a significant centre of trade and a respectable economic city-state with advanced civilization and culture. Samos is the birthplace of several great personalities of antiquity like the great mathematician Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicurus and the astronomer Aristarchus. The island played important role in the war against the Persian invasion in the 5th century BC.

 

 

The island of Samos is dotted with nice villages and three main settlements with ports and tourist facilities of hotels and restaurants Pithagorion, Karlovassi and Vathy. The beaches near to these three towns are usually more visited but there are many less-known beautiful beaches on the eastern side of Samos. The sites of ancient Pythagoreion and Heraion are a must for every visitor. They both are characterised as World Heritage Sites and wonders of engineering and architecture. The Eupalinos Tunnel is the greatest example, an underground tunnel for water supply of the town built in the 6th century BC.

 

The local muscat wine of Samos is very famous and is among the Greek exported products. The liquors of Ouzo and Souma are also produced in Samos. Other local products are also olive oil, honey and handmade pottery well-known since antiquity.

 

By air from Athens International Airport or by ferry boats departing from Pireaus Port in Athens to the ports of Pithagorion, Karlovassi and Vathy in Samos. There is also connection with Kuşadasi in Turkey.
