Psara is a remote, rocky island sparsely populated. It is not popular as a tourist destination and the hotels and restaurants are very few. It is though the perfect place for peace and relaxation.
History
Psara is the birthplace of glorious naval admirals and part of the naval tradition that flourished in Greece. Psara had a leading role in the resistance of the Greeks against the Turks during the revolution of 1821. The privileges once had been given to the residents for the development in trading led to a strong naval force of Psara. The courage of the brave Psarians fighting against the Turks is memorable but Turks answered with slaughter in retaliation in 1824.
Geography
Psara spans an area of 44,5 sq. km. with a total population of 448 residents. The island closer to Psara is Chios on the east.
Sights
The tiny rocky island of heroes has many beaches. Some of them are: Lemnos, Lakka, Lazaretta, Katsouni, Arhontiki, Kato Yialos. There are several small churches and chapels on Psara of simple and plain architecture and decoration. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the historical evidence of the past was gone in the Holocaust of Psara from the Turks in 1824.
