Description of Corinthia

Corinthia is the region of the Peloponnese closest to the capital of Athens. The combination of easy access from Athens and an inviting coastline has made Korinthia the favourite short trip destination in both summer and winter. The mountainous villages of Trikala and the lovely nature surrounding them are the ideal weekend in winter, whereas Loutraki is a favourite venue all year round. There are hotels and traditional pension and guesthouses in Corinthia and the restaurants are well known for the delicious cuisine they serve.

Corinthia owes its history largely to its strategic position adjoining the Isthmus of Corinth. Corinthia has been the background of many of the major Greek Myths but little is still seen from that glorious past. Here was the most important Temple of Aphrodite in Greece and Nemea was the place where Hercules succeeded in his first achievement by killing the lion. Several empires have wrestled for dominance over the region of Corinthia in order to rule the isthmus. Romans have constructed a wall across the isthmus and the Turks have tried to curve a canal too but the much anticipated project took place only in 1881.

Corinthia is a region situated in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese and its neighbouring regions are Attica to the northeast, Achaia to the west, Arcadia to the southwest and Argolida to the southeast. The region spans an area of 2.290 sq. km. and a total population of 154.624 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is Corinth and is well known because of the Corinth Canal. The higher mountains of the region are Kyllini or Ziria and Aroania. Corinthia has hot summers and mild winters and the plains in the region are very famous for the local wine production.

The city of Corinth is not a site but as it is connected with the suburban railway network, it seems that the distance between Corinth and Athens is getting shorter. The visit to the region of Corinthia must include a walk in the area of Ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth. Because of the easy access from Athens, the coastal villages like Xylokastro, Agioi Theodori, Kinetta are very famous beaches for the weekend as Athenians have summer houses there. The coastal Loutraki has been famous as a resort since antiquity for the healing thermal baths. In the mountainous mainland there are the villages of Trikala, Karteri, Kefalari, Goura, Feneos and Stymfalia ideal for a weekend trip in winter. Nemea is well known for the wine production in the fertile plains around.
