Info

General

Corinth is the capital city of the prefecture of Corinthia and the third largest city of Peloponnese. Today, it is all about a modern city with laid-out streets and roads that lead in coastal areas, in the center, uniting the whole city indeed. In many of them cars are forbidden, so the city is absolutely pedestrian friendly. A visit in Corinth gives you the chance to enjoy shopping, walking, relaxation, but most of all sightseeing.

The patron Saint of the city is Agios Pavlos, with its church being located in the city center. The symbol, however, of Corinth is the winged Pegasus, a well known statue set in the Square of Eleftherios Venizelos.

History

Corinth derives its name from Ancient Corinth, a city-state of antiquity. In 1858, the old city, now known as Archaia Korinthos (Αρχαία Κόρινθος), located 3 km (1.9 mi) SW of the modern city, was totally destroyed by an earthquake. Nea Korinthos or New Corinth was then built on the coast of the Gulf of Corinth, repaired after a further earthquake in 1928, and rebuilt again after a great fire in 1933.

Geography

Located about 78 kilometres (48 mi) southwest of Athens, Corinth is surrounded by the coastal townlets of (clockwise) Lechaio, Isthmia, Kechries, and the inland townlets of Examilia and the archaeological site and village of ancient Corinth. Natural features around the city include the narrow coastal plain of Vocha, the Corinthian Gulf, the Isthmus of Corinth cut by its canal, the Saronic Gulf, the Oneia Mountains, and the monolithic rock of Acrocorinth, where the medieval acropolis was built.

Sights

The Church of St Paul (Agiou Pavlou) and the statue of Pegasus in the Eleftherios Venizelos Square are maybe the most known sights of the city of Corinth. However, Corinth is a historic "Bible", with dozens of worth seeing attractions.

The Folklore Museum of the city, the Museum of Ancient Corinth and its archaeological area, the Museum of Isthmia, the Railway Station, but also the impressive building of Zambani, the Church of Agia Fotini are also very interesting. Visitors should see the ancient stadium of Isthmia, the port of Lechaio, the Examilleion Wall as well.

Both the city and the prefecture in general have areas with great history, rare natural beauty and interesting spots. So if you are in the mood to discover them, let yourself enjoy the most of your trip!
