Description of Methana

Methana is an island-like peninsula in Saronic Gulf which is often misunderstood as an island. It is popular as a destination for mainlanders because of the easy access by car and there are many summer houses here. There are also hotels and restaurants and Methana receives a great number of visitors during the summer.

Methana is a peninsula in the Peloponnese, in Corinthia region that spans an area of 50 sq. km. with a total population of 2.057 residents. The islands closer to Methana are Agistri and Aegina on the north, and Poros on the southeast.

History of Methana

---

Methana is a dormant volcano and the last eruption happened in 1700 in a submarine volcano. Methana is the northwesternmost of the arc of the Aegean islands of which the active volcanic areas are also the islands of Milos, Santorini and Nisyros. The area has been inhabited since 1500 BC and in 1990 a Mycenaean settlement was excavated.

Because of its volcanic origin, Methana has a natural thermal spring and has also a public spa. The landscape consists of hills covered with dense pine forests, while beaches and lovely bays are all around Methana. Some of the most popular beaches are: Dristeika,Megalohorion, Megalo Potami, Kammeni Gi, Vathi, Makrilogos, Palea Loutra, Kounoupitsa, Agios Georgios, Agios Nikolaos. Agii Theodori, Kipseli.
