Info

General

Folegandros is a rigid rock mountain peek, a genuine form of wild and harsh beauty. It is popular as an alternative destination for tourists who claim more relaxation rather intense night life. Folegandros Island offers several hotels for you to choose among and some of the most impressive beaches of raw beauty.

History

According to tradition, the first residents of Folegandros Island were Cretans who came here under the orders of Folegandros, Minoa’s son. In 425 BC, the island Folegandros is under Athenian Rule as inscriptions found on Acropolis of Athens indicate. Little is known about the history of Folegandros other than it went under Venetian Rule in the 12th century and then under Ottoman Turks.

Geography

Folegandros spans an area of 32,21 sq. km. with a total population of 667 residents. The islet nearest to Folegandros is Kardiotissa and is not inhabited. The islands closer to Folegandros are Sikinos on the east and Milos on the west.

Sights

The church which is built on the hill near the settlement of Hora is a must-see. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary and the route that leads there is a stone built foot path with stunning view over the island and the sea. Preferably visit it in the evening to enjoy the sunset. In Folegandros there are 20 kilometres in total of nature trails. Footpaths are in very good condition and attract visitors who want to experience the natural beauty of the island. The most popular beach is that next to the port of Karavostassis. A famous but remote beach that you can visit by either following the footpath or by boat is Katergo, (meaning labour in Greek). The wild beauty of the steep rocks makes this beach seem almost timeless.

The handmade pasta is the specialty in the local cuisine served with meat cooked with tomato juice. ‘Karpouzenia’ is a local pie made of watermelon, honey and sesame served as a desert.
