Ierapetra is the largest town on the southeast coast with a long beach of grey sand and the remarkable distinction of receiving more hours of sunshine per year than anywhere else in Europe. Ierapetra is a largely unremarkable place and it attracts relatively few tourists. There are taverns and hotels along the waterfront.
Ierapetra has been inhabited since 8th century BC and by the 2nd century BC it was the largest city-state on the island. During the Roman period, Ierapetra remained an important seaport. The Venetians built a fortress to defend the harbour.Ierapetra spans an area of 394 sq. km. with a total population of 15.323 residents. It is part of the region of Lasithi.The beach in the town of Ierapetra and the surrounding beaches are fine with busy nightlife. However, Ierapetra gives you the chance for a less touristy experience of Crete.
