29-11-2012 13:47If you are interested in archaeological sites, Loutraki makes an ideal starting point for exploring nearby places of great historical interest. Within a short drive distance there are the sites of Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nafplion, Olympia and Delphi. Do not miss the chance to make your own journey through history!
Goddess Hera’s Cult
Hera’s Cult begins in the Geometric Period and around 800 BC the first apsidal temple of Hera, of which nothing remains, was built there by the sea. In the 6th century BC a new Doric temple was built slightly to the west and adjacent to this an elongate altar. East, in the middle of the valley, you will see the remains of a rectangular building that was considered to be the temple of Hera Limenaia, but newer theories suggest that it was a restaurant for pilgrims and ancillary facilities. In between the two structures there was a small lake and water reservoir with arched sides and pillars in the center, a bilge structure of the 4th century BC considered to be very important.
The Archaeological Site of Heraion
The Archaeological Site of Heraion is at Cape Melagkavi (western end of the Perahora peninsula). The area has been inhabited since prehistoric era. The settlement of Heraion, west of Eschatiotida Lake (today Vouliagmeni Lake), saw a period of prosperity during the Archaic period (7th-6th century BC.). Excavations by the British Archaeological School (1930-1933) brought to light, among other things, a forum, temples of Hera Akraia and Hera Limenaia (with rich findings), two-storey arcade (with Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic columns on the first floor) residential foundations, sections of fortifications and roads, water reservoirs and fountains.
