Description of Andros
Andros being proud and noble has the most distinct and different character of all the islands of the complex of
Cyclades. It has white traditional houses and neoclassical mansions that many of them are now luxury
hotels.
Andros has rich vegetation and abundant water but also the typical frugal landscape of
Cyclades of sandy beaches and rocky mountain ranges.

Andros spans an area of 380 sq. km. with a total population of 10.000 residents. It is in the north point of
Cyclades and is the second island in size after the island of
Naxos. It is the island closer to the mainland of
Athens.
History of Andros
The history of
Andros has its roots in the era of Cycladic Civilization and it has followed the same historical path but in more favorable way to the rest of the islands of
Cyclades due to the strong economy established with naval power and trading.
Andros establishes its economy under the Venetian Rule by trading silk textiles. By the end of the 18th century,
Andros is the second most important port after
Pireus, counting hundreds of vessels and played a key role in the Greek Revolution.
Sightseeing on Andros
Hora is one of the loveliest towns in
Cyclades with great architecture. Hora can also boast for two outstanding museums:
Andros Archaeological Museum and
Museum of Modern Art that both were donated to the state by
Goulandris family, one of the wealthy ship-owning families of
Andros Island.
Batsi is the most popular resort in the summer months as there are a lot of choices of
accommodation and amusement.
Batsi has a big sandy beach that is ideal for swimming and marine sports.
The village of Apikia is worth a visit for its famous
water source Sariza.

xerotiri and
kopanisti cheese.
Getting to Andros
By ferry or catamaran boats departing from Rafina Port in Athens. The island is also connected directly with
Tinos and
Mykonos islands on daily basis.
Best time to visit Andros
You can enjoy a different aspect of the island throughout the year, but summer offers more options. From late April till September there are always interesting exhibitions taking place and many cultural events.
