Description of Sporades

Sporades are scattered in the Aegean, seeming more like mountain slopes rather than a group of islands. Unlike the famous Cyclades with the dry and rocky landscapes, Sporades are full of dense pine forests, orchards and olive groves. The lovely typical scenery of those islands is beaches either with sand or pebbles where the shadow of pine trees reaches the shore. Although, Sporades are not so famous they offer many hotels and restaurants for your stay. Discover them!

Geography of Sporades

Sporades spread in the middle of Aegean Sea, close to Thessaly in the mainland and northern of Euboea. The group of Eastern Aegean Islands lays on the east of Sporades. They comprise of 24 islands of which only four are permanently inhabited and cover an area of 275,7 sq.km. in total. Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros have 13.556 permanent residents in total.

History of Sporades

Sporades have played role in the history but not the first one. The remoteness of the position has kept them from the stage of the major historical events. However, the islands of Sporades did not escape from the luck of the rest of the islands in the Aegean. The first settlements are found here since prehistoric era. Sporades take part in the wars against the Persian invasions. They go under Philippe and Macedonians and afterwards become part of the Roman Empire. The islands become then part of the Byzantine Empire and go under Venetian Rule for some years before the permanent Ottoman Rule till the Greek War of Independence when they finally become part of the Greek State.

Climate of Sporades

The climate of Sporades is typical Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers. The warmest period is form May till October and the hottest months are July and August with a temperature of 30°C. Because of their position in the northern part of the Aegean and the dense forests, the temperature is lower than in Cyclades of Athens so it is wise to take a light cardigan even in the middle of summer.
