General

The region of Pieria is located in the southern part of Macedonia, facing the Aegean Sea. Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece and the seat of Greek gods, rises in the southern part of Pieria. In the Elatohori Ski Center you can enjoy skiing on the slopes of the mythical mountain. The picturesque villages of Panteleimonas, Elatohori and Litohoro are famous as winter destinations while in the summer Pieria attracts numerous tourists on the seaside resorts of Platamonas and Katerini Beach that offer many hotels and restaurants.

History

The region of Pieria was a settlement of an expelled Thracian tribe that came here. Pieria was incorporated in the Kingdom of Macedon and became part of the Roman Empire after the Fourth Macedonian War, and later part of the Byzantine Empire. It was invaded by the Turks and became part of the Ottoman Empire for five centuries, until the Balkan Wars in 1913, when Pieria joined the Greek State. During the Greco-Turkish War refugees from Asia Minor came in Pieria and several places were named after their former homelands like Nea Trapezounta and Nea Efesos.

Geography

The region of Pieria is situated in Macedonia, spanning an area of 1.516 sq. km. and a total population of 134.739 inhabitants. The neighbouring regions are Imathia to the north, Kozani to the west and Larissa to the south. The capital city of the region is Katerini. The tallest mountain in Greece and mythical seat to the Pantheon of twelve Gods, Mount Olympus is situated to the south of the region.
 

Sights

The region of Pieria is rich in attractions of great historical and archaeological interest. The most important of them are the Neolithic Settlement in Makrigialos, the remains of the ancient city of Pydna, the Castle at Platamonas and the sacred Dion where Macedonians used for the worship of the Olympian gods. Before his eastern adventures, Alexander the Great sacrificed here. In tourist terms, among the most visited places of the region are: the ski center in Elatohori in the winter and the seaside resorts of Platamonas and Katerini in the summer.
