General

The region of Grevena is one of the most beautiful winter destinations in Northern Greece. The wild beauty of the mountain range of Pindos and the picturesque traditional villages surrounded by the dense forests along with the ski center of Vasilitsa, beautiful hotels and great restaurants and taverns are the main reasons to visit the region.

 

History

Systematic paleologic research and excavations have been carried out for the last 17 years by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the region of Grevena. In 1997 the excavation team discovered the first pair of impressively sized tusks (4.39 m. long), the biggest ones belonging to that particular species to be found in Greece, Europe and possibly the world. In 2007, the second discovery of yet another fossilized animal highlighted the importance of the area near the village of Milia. Its geological age is estimated at 1.5 - 3 million years! The region has been a battlefield in the 40’s for the violent clashes of the Mussolini’s Italian army against Greece.
 

Geography

The region of Grevena is situated in western Macedonia, sharing borders with Ioannina to the west, Kastoria to the northwest, Kozani to the north, Larissa to the southeast and Trikala to the south. The region spans an area of 2.291 sq. km. with a population of 38.256 residents. The capital city of the region is the city of Grevena with 10.939 inhabitants. The region is mainly mountainous with the highest mountains being part of Pindos mountain range: Mount Smolikas, Hasia and Vourinos.

Sights

The region of Grevena is mountainous with slopes of dense forests, dotted with small traditional villages and numerous stone built bridges. The valley of Valia Calda (warm valley) has been an important ecosystem with animals of rare species. The rare findings of the fossils of mastodons in the area have highlighted the significance of the region. The ski center of Vasilitsa is among the best ski centres in Greece with very good quality and quantity of snow that gathers numerous visitors, lovers of winter sports and snow activities.
