The region of Florina is situated in West Macedonia, sharing borders with both FYROM and Albania, also being the gateway to the Prespa Lakes to the west and a small ski resort Vigla Pisoderi. Lygkistis is the ancient name of the region of Florina, which was an autonomous state relative to Corinth until it was subdued by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great and became part of the kingdom of Macedonia and after the Roman Empire. In Byzantine the region of Florina became the field of many battles of the Byzantines with Bulgarians, Normans and Franks until Turks invade and rule the region for about five centuries, till 1912 when Florina joins Greece.
