The region is named after the ancient city of Pella, capital city of Macedon’s kingdom under King Archelaos and the older capital of Aigai (Vergina) remained the royal cemetery. The area and the city of Pella continue to flourish until the conquest of Macedonia by the Romans in 168 BC X after the defeat at the battle of Pydna and became part of the Roman Empire. During the Byzantine period, Pella enjoys some prosperity until the 7th century AD because of its strategically set position by Via Egnatia. Following approximately 500 years of Turkish rule, Pella joined Greece in 1913, following the Balkan Wars. During the interwar period in 1922 the area formed the current character through the movements of populations. Refugees from Eastern Thrace, Pontus and Asia Minor to Eastern Rumelia came, creating a multicultural group of people who until now coexists in peace.

The region of Pella is situated in Macedonia, sharing borders to the north with FYROM and with the neighbouring regions of Kilkis to the east, Thessaloniki to the southeast, Imathia to the south, Kozani and Florina to the west. The region spans an area of 2.506 sq. km. with a population of 148.190 residents. The capital city of the region is the city of Edessa. The region is mainly mountainous with the highest mountains being Mount Voras, Paiko and Vermion.

Among the numerous interesting sights in the region of Pella the archaeological site of the ancient capital city of Macedonian kingdom stands out with unique pebble mosaics. For the nature lovers, the region has some awesome natural landscapes: Lake Vegoritida and the village around it, the mountainous villages of Aghios Athanassios, Panagitsa, Arnissa, Zervi, Kerasia, Karydia close to the Kaimaktsalan Ski Center, the ski center with the longest winter period in Greece, the natural hot springs in Aridaia known as Loutra Pozar famous for its healing properties. The capital city of the region, Edessa, is worth a visit for its waterfalls.
