Galaxidi, a known weekend destination
26-01-2015 12:17Modern Galaxidi is a favourite destination for short trips, in both summer and winter. Galaxidi is located in Central Greece 230km far from Athens. A trip to Galaxidi is commonly combined with a visit to Delphi, as it lies in the heart of Krissaios Bay under the shadow of Parnassos Mountain.
Galaxidi is built on the site of the ancient city Locric Chalaion and in its long history, except for peak days, witnessed the raids and the rage of many conquerors. Researchers and archaeologists believe that Galaxidi inhabited from the 6th BC millennium. In the 10th century around the ancient Chalaion renamed Galaxidi. The naval power of Galaxidi, however, forced Turks to surrender rights and freedoms in order to benefit themselves. In 1571-1572 Galaxidi was trying to get rid of the Turkish yoke. After a long period of difficulties, in 1580 a terrible earthquake destroys Galaxidi, in 1665 a fierce raid drives residents from their site-prosperity back again to Galaxidi.
In 1813 this little town is the fourth port of Greece with many maritime and commercial activities. After 1830, the wind of freedom blows to the greater part of Greece, Galaxidi reborn, it knows booming economy, there was built buildings and schools. Work from that period is the municipal market and Pithagorio (1880), which it is currently used for various cultural events. Throughout the 18th century until the late 19th Galaxidi sailing trips out to all ports of the Mediterranean.
Nowadays, Galaxidi is a calm and picturesque town and a very famous weekend destination. It is also a destination for yachts because of the marina and the facilities offered.
