Zagorohoria is the name of a cluster of 46 preserved mountain villages dotted on the slopes of the mountain range of Pindos. The name of Zagorochoria derives from the Slavic term Zagora meaning behind the mountain and horia, the Greek word for villages. Although the villages are remote, they are connected with old stone built bridges and paths that are still used today. All the villages that comprise the cluster of Zagorohoria or Zagoria offer accommodation in traditional guesthouses and boutique hotels that are usually restored mansions and exceptional local cuisine in restaurants and taverns.
The historical significance of the villages can be seen in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of the area. The difficult access on the steep mountains of Pindos seemed like a well fortified shelter for the prosperous Greek families that came in Zagorohoria to avoid the suppression and the heavy taxation of the Ottoman Empire that has occupied their lands. Zagorohoria safeguarded the Greek civilisation and the literary culture. The economic prosperity of these mountainous villages is evident in the local architecture. The most visited villages are: Megalo and Mikro Papigo, Monodendri, Aspraggeli, Vitsa, Elati and Kipi. The cluster of Zagorohoria is 445 km far from Athens and 370 km far from Thessaloniki.
