Step back in time at Doma, a hotel like no other. An elegantly restored neoclassical mansion, Doma’s distinctive style reflects the building’s distinguished heritage.
A former consulate right on the waterfront, it’s a short walk from the Old Town of Chania, cosmopolitan heart of the Greek island of Crete.
Decorated with antique heirlooms, Doma has been owned and run by the same Cretan family for generations. Gracious
hospitality is a hallmark of our hotel.
Guests return year after year, because staying at Doma is like coming home. A bowl of fragrant frangipani and a sliver of candied peel are typical welcome treats.
Doma’s 24 rooms and suites are furnished with understated charm.
Each room is different, but all are designed with
tranquillity in mind.
Bedrooms overlook the sea or a secret garden with a tinkling fountain - an idyllic retreat for reading, writing, or daydreaming.
Residents may also enjoy two lounges decorated with period furniture and an extraordinary collection of headdresses.
But the pièce de résistance is the breakfast room, with its antique prints, eclectic ornaments, and picture
windows framing the bay.
A feast of Cretan delicacies served in this exceptional setting makes for an unforgettable start to every day.Facilities
Rooms
All standard rooms are decorated individually with great attention to detail. Interiors exude serenity and simplicity, so guests can imprint their own personality onto their favourite room.
Period furniture is combined with modern comforts such as top-quality mattresses
and newly renovated bathrooms with powerful showers.
All rooms have a private bathroom, central heating, air-conditioning and ceiling fan, telephone, and a hairdryer.
Some rooms do not have a TV in order to maintain the sense of a peaceful refuge. However, wireless internet is available free of charge in all public areas.
The hotel is situated on a coastal road, so sea-view rooms can be noisy at certain times.
Light sleepers are advised to request a room at the rear, overlooking the delightful garden.
Suites
The view from the top-floor suite is magnificent. With a whole floor for the exclusive use of guests, this suite feels more like a private residence.Painted wooden ceilings, antique rugs, and rich textiles create an intimate atmosphere. Predominantly styled in blue and white, the suite’s nautical feel captures the closeness of the sea. French windows open onto a vast private terrace where guests can sunbathe in
secret or enjoy the sunset.
On the first floor are 3 additional suites that overlook the sea or the garden. Carefully chosen antiques and a rich mix of colourful fabrics give each suite a distinct character.
Spacious bathrooms come with powerful showers and organic Korres amenities.
All suites have central heating, air-conditioning, telephone, television, hairdryer, and a mini-bar.
Features
On arrival, guests are greeted with traditional sweets and refreshing tea brewed from Cretan herbs. Most of the staff have been with us for decades and welcome regular visitors as old friends.
Guests may enjoy two ground-floor parlours decorated with museum-quality treasures, including memorabilia from the Cretan revolution and a remarkable collection of hats from around the world.
Refreshments are served here throughout the day and free wireless internet is available. Tea and aperitifs are taken by the fireplace in cooler months.
Guests may prefer to relax in wicker armchairs in the shaded atrium overlooking the peaceful garden, which features a marble fountain. Outdoor seating hidden among the foliage offers cool respite from the midday sun.
Breakfast is served in the third-floor dining room, decorated with a splendid collection of 19th century engravings, farming tools, and family photographs. A wall of windows opens onto the dazzling sweep of the bay and the sea breeze.
The buffet breakfast offers an array of local and seasonal produce, including dried and fresh fruits, cereals, nuts, and honey, traditional rusks, sesame and aniseed cookies, and home-made orange, quince or rose preserves served with yoghurt. Eggs are also cooked to order.
Freshly squeezed orange juice and a pot of tea or coffee with a beaker of warm milk is brought to every table, lovingly set with embossed crockery and embroidered linens.
The reception closes at 11pm. Guests will be given a front door key so they may come and go as they please.

Doma Hotel is on the waterfront, just beyond the fortified walls of Chania’s Old Town. Walking from the hotel to the Venetian harbour (one kilometre away) takes about 20 minutes along a scenic coastal promenade.
The eastern suburb of Halepas has long been home to the city’s most elite residents, including the former Greek prime minister, Eleftherios Venizelos.
Our street is named after the statesman. His home, now a museum, is just a short walk away. Venizelos loved to stroll along the beach in front of the hotel at dusk.
The area has many fine neoclassical mansions that have survived since the 19th century.
Doma is about 15 minutes by car from both the port of Souda and Chania airport. Transfers can be arranged on request. Alternatively, a taxi will drop you outside the hotel.
