Thrace or Thraki as it is referred to, is one of Greece’s most striking but least-visited areas. Thrace is hidden under an intense of landscape diversity, cultural differences and fields of agriculture and livestock. The tourism is far less here in comparison to other parts of Greece, yet you can find hotels and accommodation facilities easily as the cities in Thrace are trading centres. Thrace may be a hinterland, but as Greece’s only land border with Turkey, it’s a very strategic one.
Thrace’s ancient history is shrouded in myth and mystery religion. The secret rituals associated with Orpheus, the mythical, tragic Thracian father of music were well known since antiquity but they have always been kept secret about their content. Thrace was occupied by Philip II of Macedon and later by the Romans. Thrace because of the Via Egnatia trade route and the defence line for the Byzantine capital of Constantinople, it was of vital importance. However, Thrace didn’t escape from the suffering of invasions from Goths, Huns, Vandals, Bulgars, Pechenegs, Cumans, Latin Crusadersand finally Ottoman Turks. Thrace in modern history changed hands frequently in the past hundred years starting from the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, the Balkan Wars of 1912–13, the First World War up to the failed Greek invasion of Asia Minor in 1922. Thrace joined partially Greece in 1919 and finally in 1923.
Thrace shares borders with the regions of northeastern Macedonia, Bulgaria on the north and European Turkey on the east. It spans a total area of 8.578 sq. km. with a total population of 338.005 residents. Thrace dominates the southern end of the Rodopi mountain range and several major rivers surpass its lands. Evros River is also the natural border to Turkey. It comprises of the Prefectures of Xanthi, Rodopi, Evros.The climate of Thrace is a mix of Alpine and temperate climate. The winters are cold and damp with snow fall and frost and the summers are warm and dry. In coastal areas the climate is Mediterranean and the interior is basically an intermediate transition between the Mediterranean and central European. -
