Elati & Pertouli, two beautiful villages in Thessaly
04-10-2012 16:05Beginning from Athens by car directing to Elati of Trikala we will not get tired. Although it is a distance of 360 km. we follow the route via Domokos – Karditsa – Trikala as the shorter way 4 hours. From Thessalonica your journey is even easier as it is just 220 km. about 2 hours of driving. On the way to Elati, you will meet first Pyli, a small town 18 km from Trikala. Pyli, built on the foothills of Mount Koziaka, faces Mount Itamos, creating a natural narrow passage connecting flat Thessaly with the mountainous Ipiros. River Portiatis, tributary of River Penaeus crosses the two mountains, but also village of Pyli.
Here is one of the most important Byzantine monuments of our country, the church of Panaghia Porta with the two mosaic icons of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary. Passing the narrow bridge of Portiatis, you leave behind you the village of Pyli and climb up the slopes of Mount Koziaka, after 14 km you will meet the village of Elati 34 km far from Trikala and is biggest of the mountainous villages of the prefecture of Trikala. Elati is located in altitude of 950m. surrounded by a dense fir-trees forest in southern Pindos mountrange.
Elati attracts numerous tourists all year round and provides a very remarkable tourist infrastructure that does not disappoint the visitors like traditional quest houses, hotels, shops of traditional products, cafes and taverns famous for the tasty dishes that they offer. It is the ideal base both for those who want to tour in the regions around and for those who love sport activities and adventure, like walking, biking, riding, ski, mountaineering, climbing.
In the place of Red rock there are three climbing ways, while under the higher top of Mount Koziaka (1700m.) is the mountainous shelter “Chatzipetros”. In 6km. distance far from Elati you will meet the ski centre of Pertouli in altitude of 1200m. surrounded by one of the most beautiful forests of fir trees of our country. Although it is relatively small, is equipped however with ski-lift and cable car.
Passing by the ski centre, you will reach the village of Pertouli after 3 km. It is 48km. far from Trikala and is built in altitude of 1100m. Pertouli is a small picturesque village with tourist growth especially in the past few years. Continuing from Pertouli you can visit Neraidochori and the villages of River Aspropotamos. The entire mountainous region of the prefecture of Trikala, seems very much alike with the famous European destinations of Alpes having dense forests of fir trees, rich meadows, rivers, imposing mountains is composed a breathtaking landscape.
