Open air cinemas: watching a film under the stars!
15-09-2012 16:05Greece is blessed with a unique mild Mediterranean climate that has shaped most of Greek characteristics in culture and mentality. One of them is Greeks’ love for summer and their culture outdoor activities as they literally live outside during summer.
The indoor winter activities turn into their outdoor summer versions: tavernas with backyards, tables of coffee shops under trees, bars on stunning view terraces and movie theatres could not be the exception, open air cinemas!
The story started in the beginning of 20th century with the first movies being projected in the yards of pastry shops and coffee shops and there was no ticket for the movie. But that was the audience’s love for cinema that in the years to follow the open air movie theatres are established. After the 2nd World War and till the 70’s when the TV gets in the Greek homes, the open air cinemas in Athens outnumbered the indoor halls.
Watching a film under the stars is a romantic kind of entertainment that people enjoy. High fences with jasmine around the yard, director’s chairs and tables, soft drinks and beverages are some of the ingredients of this magic created in open air cinemas.
The plays are usually the ones first released in the winter or classical ones, as this kind of cinemas offer magic with no need of special effects. Sit back while enjoying your drink and enjoy a movie with a scent of jasmine and summer breeze under the stars.
Wherever in Greece, there is an open air cinema for sure. They open from May till the end of September. The first play starts usually right after sunset and the ticket costs the same price as for an indoor cinema theatre, € 7 - € 8. Beverages are not included in the price.
Tip:
No matter how hot a day, bring your jacket. Open air cinemas are fresh, full of plants, so sitting in garden-like surroundings for two hours might get too fresh for you.
