The little and untouristed island of Oinousses is surprisingly a place of great significance: one third of the Greek ship owners come from here. The well disciplined merchant marine academy and the fishing fleet are some of the elements of this sipping aristocracy’s wealth. Although, they say that Oinousses has been kept deliberately tranquil to keep it private for the wealthy families and the locals, the island is surprisingly lively in summer with a hotel and houses for rent.The island was famous for its wine in antiquity. The name of the island possibly has come from the wine production too (oinos: wine). Although excavations have not taken place on the island there are several findings of ancient relics of tools, pots and mosaics.
Oinousses spans an area of 14 sq. km. with a total population of 1.050 residents. Oinousses is located very close to the Turkish coastline of the region of Çeşme on the east. The islands closer to Oinousses are Chios on the west and Lesvos on the north.
The statue of a mermaid is on the port of the island, a symbol of the strong connections of the island and the seafaring. The island has a great naval tradition and there is Naval Academy, Naval high school and a Maritime Museum. There are several lovely beaches around the island.
Local wine is still produced and one of the famous local dishes is the handmade pie with herbs.
