The region of Thesprotia is the most northwestern tip of Greece with a unique combination of mountainous landscapes overlooking a lacy coastline facing the Ionian Sea. The region of Thesprotia, although is has some remarkably beautiful beaches and summer resorts like Syvota, is mostly known for its busy port town of Igoumenitsa which is the ferry gate to Corfu and Italy. Thesprotia offers accommodation in hotels, especially in the places close to the coastline as the mountainous part of the region does not have developed tourist infrastructure.
The region of Thesprotia has been inhabited since Paleolithic times and the region is named after the Greek tribe of Thesprotians who founded settlements around the 2nd millennium BC. After the Roman conquest, the city of Fotiki was founded and throughout the Byzantine Empire the geographical location of Thesprotia made it a stronghold of the western extremity of the empire. For this reason very often suffered from raids and attacks. Then, it is part of Despotate of Epirus, while in the 15th century became an administrative part of the Venetian Republic. After the Venetians, the Ottomans followed. The inhabitants of the plains and work in estates have to pay taxes to the Ottoman Empire, while developing technical, commercial and craft activities such as tanning, bazaars, crafts, as iron, the bronze, etc. Exceptions to tax payment were the mountainous areas and especially the region of Souli, the autonomy of which passed into collective memory as a place of symbolic resistance to Ottoman domination. Thesprotia became a part of Greece in 1913.Thesprotia is a region situated in the north part of Epirus sharing borders with Albania to the north and facing the Ionian Sea to the west. The neighbouring regions are Ioannina to the east and Preveza to the south. The region spans an area of 1.515 sq. km. and a total population of 46.811 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is Igoumenitsa. The region of Thesprotia is mainly mountainous with Souliou, Paramythias and Tsamanta Mountains. The rivers of the region are well linked to mythology: Thyamis and Acheron, the river leading to the place of deads.
The capital city of the region, Igoumenitsa is a busy port connecting the mainland with the Ionian Islands and Italy. Igoumenitsa is an important commercial port and the construction of Egnatia Odos motorway will contribute to its establishment as the main west port for cargo. The numerous villages situated on the coastline are visited in the summer and the most famous resort is the islands of Syvota. Apart from the seaside, Thesprotia offers marvelous mountainous landscapes.
