The region of Rhodope is named after the mountain range to the north, sharing borders with Bulgaria. The region of Rodopi is full of natural beauty with fertile plains and high mountains with the largest minority of Muslims in Greece. According to the Greek mythology and the Roman poet Ovid, Queen Rhodope of Thrace was the wife of King Haemus. Haemus was vain and haughty and compared himself and his wife Rhodope to Zeus and Hera. Because of their vanity, the gods were offended and turned the couple into mountains. The most important city in ancient times was Maronia and later the city of Komotini became one of the most influential Byzantine towns. The area was ruled by Ottoman Turks for five centuries, a fact that influenced the local culture and is still alive in everyday life.
Rhodope is situated in the northern part of Greece sharing borders with Bulgaria to the north with Rhodope mountain range. The neighbouring regions are Xanthi and Evros. The region spans an area of 2.543 sq. km. and a total population of 110.828 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is the city of Komotini. The Rhodope mountain range lies in the north and the south part of the region faces the Aegean Sea.The ancient city Maronia was founded by colonists from Chios, in the southwestern slopes of Ismaros in mid-7th BC century and became a mighty and populous city-state. Nowadays you can visit the ruins of the city and a bit further the ancient city of Ismaros Cyclopean walls and other structures, prior to the eighth century BC. The forest of Nymfaea is mainly covered by pine trees and is ideal for walking, sports or relaxation. This is an exquisite natural balcony, from where each visitor enjoys a rare sight and beauty. During the summer you can visit the beaches to the south of the region.
