The region of Preveza is the southern part of Epirus Riviera, embraced by the Ambracian Gulf facing the Ionian Sea. The location of the region has made it an important trade center popular summer resorts with hotels, sea view restaurants and nightlife like Parga and the city of Preveza. The undersea road tunnel across the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf links Epirus and the city of Preveza with the cape of Aktio in Aetoloacarnania and has greatly contributed in the development of the region of Preveza.
The area was first settled by the tribe of Thesprotians and became part of the Kingdom of Epirus and later the Roman Empire. In 31 BC Octavian who later was the Roman Emperor Augustus, defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the famous naval Battle of Actium and the city of Nikopolis was built to celebrate his victory. The present city of Preveza was established after the decline of Nicopolis, during the Byzantine Empire. After Byzantines, the region of Preveza was occupied by Crusaders and then became part of the Despotate of Epirus. The region passed under Ottoman rule in the 14th century and finally joined Greece in 1913.
Preveza is a region situated in the southern part of Epirus facing the Ionian Sea to the west and the Ambracian Gulf the south. The neighbouring regions are Aetoloacarnania to the south, Arta to the east, Ioannina and Thesprotia to the north and Ionian Islands to the west. The region spans an area of 1.036 sq. km. and a total population of 59.600 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is Preveza. The region of Preveza has the rivers of Aherontas, Louros and Arahthos and extensive coastline.
The modern port of Preveza along with the romantic port of Parga, are the two main summer resorts of the region. The coastline of Preveza is dotted with lovely beaches, while the ports attract numerous yachts. The archaeological site of Nicopolis is very interesting as it is not just ruins of a temple but a whole ancient city. Another important sanctuary is that of Necromanteio, meaning the oracle of the deads, where the pilgrims could contact their ancestors and predict the future. According to mythology, Aherousia Lake and Aherontas River was the path leading to Hades, the underworld land of Death.
