The region of Magnesia is the mythical residence of Centaurs and its haunting beauty has created its own myth. The unique combination of natural mountainous landscapes, ski centre, traditional villages with sea view and awesome beaches has contributed to the tourist development in resorts on Mount Pelion. The wide variety of types of hotels (guesthouses to restored mansions) in close proximity to both mountain and sea offer the ideal choice for each of the four seasons, while the restaurants are famous for the high quality of food and local moonshine they serve.
Magnesia is the residence of Centaurs, creatures half man and half horses blessed with wisdom and also homeland of the mythical heroes Jason, Peleus and Achilles. Magnesia joined the Greek cities against the Persians under Philip II of Macedon and after the victory of the Romans went under Roman Rule. Magnesia was among the first Greek cities to embrace the Christian religion and therefore the city of Dimitriada prospered throughout the Byzantine era. The decline of the city began after the Turkish conquest and by the end of the 16th century the entire population has changed residence in the villages of Mount Pelion around the monasteries of Virgin Mary in Makrinitsa, in Portaria and Zagora. Pelion enjoyed freedom and developed largely cottage industry and trade activities. The economy began to grow, thanks to the production of silk and wool, weaving, woodcarving pastoral and ship building. The region of Magnesia was incorporated into the New Greek state in 1881.Magnesia is a region situated in the south part of Thessaly. The neighbouring regions are Larisa to the northwest and Fthiotida to the south, while it faces Aegean Sea and Sporades Islands to the east. The region spans an area of 2.367 sq. km. and a total population of 193.439 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is Volos. The region has a very interesting terrain with Mount Pelion dominating most of the region while it faces Pagasitikos Gulf to the south and Aegean Sea to the east.The mountain of Pelion has an astonishingly beautiful complex of villages, traditionally built on the slopes of the mountain that offer easy access to the dense forests of the area. Due to an extensive old network of cobbled pathways, the villages of Pelion are at the top of the destinations in Greece for walking and hiking. The Ski Centre attracts numerous of tourists throughout the winter, while the beaches of the region can well compete with those of the Greek Islands. Some of the most famous resorts of Magnesia are: Horto, Agios Lavrentios, Afyssos, Vizitsa, Kala Nera, Kato Gatzea, Kissos, Kritharia, Milies, Milina, Mouresi, Portaria, Tsagarada, Horefto. The capital city of the region, Volos is a modern city built by the sea with intense nightlife and famous for its restaurants.
