Description of Fokida
The region of
Fokida is named after ancient city of
Phocis and is one of the most visited places in
Greece because of the worldwide famous archaeological site and museum of
Delphi. The site has been declared as a
World Heritage Site of UNESCO and has been considered to be the centre of the ancient world. The
hotels and the
restaurants are dotted around the site while you can also stay at the maritime traditional port of
Galaxidi.
Geography of Fokida
Fokida or
Phocida is a region situated in the centre of the
Central Greece and its neighbouring regions are
Boeotia or
Viotia to the east,
Fthiotida to the north and
Aetoloacarnania to the west and is overlooking to the Corinthian Gulf of
Peloponnese to the south. The region of
Fokida spans an area of 2.120 sq. km. and a total population of 49.576 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is
Amfissa and Mount Parnassus covers most of the region while on the south there are valleys and ports like
Itea and
Galaxidi.
History of Fokida
The ancient oracle of
Delphi was considered to be the centre of the world and its significant role in political and economic life was not diminished till the late times of Roman Empire. The contribution to the struggles of Greek people for their survival is inestimable as Fokida is the birthplace of many heroes who played a crucial role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
