Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil
26-04-2013 17:26Sparta is a beautiful area full of olive trees, so in this place is the home of the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil.
Olive oil is strongly related to the Greek culture and economy since the ancient times, a very important ingredient is part of Greeks daily lives like no other.
The Museum aims to highlight the culture and technology of the olive and olive production.
In the first floor you can find the first testimonies about the olive in Greece, all about its contribution to the economy from the prehistoric times up to now, its body care uses, its role in nutrition and the mentions of its symbolic dimension in mythology, customs and religion.
In your tour you can see rare fossil olive leaves 50,000 – 60,000 years old which were found in Thera Caldera and the first texts from the 14th century on clay tablets inscribed with Linear B script.
The benefits of using olive oil and its nutrition value you will find in a separate unit, a series of long forgotten uses of oil are also revealed by exhibits.
The ground floor is devoted to the development of olive oil production, the post Byzantine technology and machinery are presented, a wooden double oil press , an animal powered olive oil press, one of the exhibition units is dedicated to soap making. The semi open air exhibition will soon be ready to host the mechanisms of a prehistoric , a Hellenistic and a Byzantine olive oil press , they will all be set in operation for the educational programmes of the museum.
You will find the Museum in Othonos – Amalias street 129 in Sparta, from 10:00 to 18:00, Wed – Mon. The entrance fee is 2€ per person.
