Sea, sun, sandy beaches and countless beautiful islands. That is what most of the tourists think about
Greece. But thankfully there is more for the visitors to explore in Greece during spring. Apart from the Greek islands, there are some mainland destinations worth visiting in spring and discover a different face of
Greece.
The noisy
capital city of
Greece is a lovely destination in spring. As
Athens seems to rebirth after a hard winter, May is the ideal time to visit the city. The mild weather helps you enjoy sightseeing as the temperatures are still not too high for a visit to
Acropolis under the morning sun and not too low for having dinner under the sky of
Attica. You will be surprised by the spring feeling and the smell of the blossomed bitter orange trees in a city that is blamed for its luck of trees.
It is only a couple of hours far from the city of
Athens and it is famous as a
weekend destination. Do not miss the chance to visit
Nafplio in spring, as it is more
romantic than ever. The surrounding landscape is at its best with flowers and trees blossoming all over and you can enjoy walking around the city and by the seaside. Visit the Castle of Palamidi on the hill and enjoy the view and the legendary Mycenae. For the daring ones of you, the beach of
Tolo is only 5 minutes driving far from the city of
Nafplio and for the gastronomy lovers there are vineyards and wineries all around the city.
This lovely town is situated in the west-southern part of
Peloponnese, built entirely in a castle on a rock only a mile far from the shore. The
medieval fortress of
Monemvasia creates a unique
atmosphere of
romance and
relaxation along with some of the most astonishing views in
Greece. The nickname used for
Monemvasia is "Gibraltar of the East" and is exactly what it looks like. Walk around the cobble paved alleys of the castle and relax under the shadow of the flowers hanging from the medieval balconies.
No matter when you visit the volcanic island of
Santorini, it is a place with breathtaking beauty. In May, you will have the chance to explore its genuine face without being overcrowded and too hot. Apart from the worldwide famous
sunsets of the
caldera, you can enjoy swimming as the climate is relatively warmer here and the summer starts a bit earlier than in the rest
Aegean Islands. Do not forget your camera, as
Santorini is one of the most favourite photographers’ places.
